Our history is marked,
like so many histories,
with prejudice and pain
but here we stand today,
an imperfect batch of citizens,
and I can’t help but be proud
to be tied to the whole mixed bag,
to the ones born here,
and to the ones
who fought
to come,
all of us united
by calling home
this vast country
that is, despite all its flaws,
a glorious sum
of its parts.
