Autumn always ends this way

The garden is scorched brown
brittle twigs poke out of the tree like whiskers
the grass is grey with dried mud

the bushes aren’t bushes anymore
they are upside-down nests of nakedness
raped by the wind

I can’t help these thoughts
autumn starts out so pretty
and always ends this way
like the rubble after a fire
like the hollow quiet after war.
