The deer always look the same
startled, breathless
hopeful that if they don’t move
I won’t see them
or maybe this encounter
never even happened
but the cat that uses our side path
as a hunting trail
his eyes are different
wide and yellow as the deer
but they show no fear
partly warning my son and me
that bird is his
partly smug
as though he knows
we are the breathless ones
witness to his dance
of greed and grace.
