The first snowfall of the year

The first snowfall of the year
started late at night,
quiet as ghosts
fluttering down
landing like butterfly kisses
surprising us in the morning
with so much whiteness.

Beautiful
in a generic way
like a poster
of any winter town.

My husband takes my son to the park,
a formal introduction
to snowballs
but he cries
perhaps wondering
who stole the grass
while he was sleeping.

I want to reassure him
anything this gentle
must be a reunion,
the earth from thousands
of years ago
rejoicing
to be enveloped in ice
once again.
