A Prairie town in April

Winter has left this land
flattened like hair
from under a wool hat.
The grass looks exhausted
from holding its breath.
What was white for so long
has given way to brown.
The remaining snow
has no romance,
hard clumps of icy dirt
like the last bit of trash after a party
these people are hungover
from winter’s long stay
desperate for colour
to return.
