My friends and I sit on a log
watching the ocean
the way it crawls in and out
not watching us
and perhaps that’s what’s appealing
about the skin of the sea
slapping against the rocks
the way it ignores people
and their strange anxieties
responsibilities
job titles
student debt
perhaps we relish
a moment of not mattering
not being asked for our opinions
or our advice
not being needed or judged
or even witnessed
just a moment of staring
at something so powerful
that returns nothing
but space.
