The tulip

The tulip is always first
in line.
Good posture
optimistic
like that keen
girl at the front
of the class with her arm
reaching high,
pick me.
Pretty
but not
the star.
One of nature’s early
magic tricks,
before she invented
peacocks.
A flower
you draw with felt pens
inside the lines.
She has lipstick skin
but you cannot see it.
It is March
and her face is still
wrapped tight
mouth closed
around a secret.
By May
she will sweat
like an upper lip
as the sun slowly loosens
winter’s grip
on her neck
and sets
her colours
free.
