Just one thing

In the shallow waters of the lake
my daughter plays with Shani
who she has just met,
a girl her age
who is fun and sharing her floaty
and they’re laughing
and making up a game
that no one understands but them
and Shani has Down syndrome
which my daughter
tells me later as just one thing
among all the other things
she learned about Shani
starting with,
don’t you agree
that she has the nicest face.
