Sunrise

The waves move back and forth on the shore,
steadily, as though the ocean itself has a pulse,
while the insects rush about on the logs
in their jagged little ways.

One bird swoops and slides
on a playground made of air.

The mountains are far enough away
to make me wonder if a crafty God
just stacked five pieces
of construction paper
in different shades of blue,
curious to see how it would look
if she tore them haphazardly
along the widest edge.

The sun eventually climbs out
from behind one of them,
slowly, bright as a cartoon treasure,
painting the sky lighter
and sending the birds
into a frenzied symphony
of warbles and trills.

Yes, yes, yes, yes, they sing,
announcing the miracle:
another day is here.
