I love the little hand signals
that strangers flutter at each other in cars
to mean “that was so kind of you”
and “please, go ahead.”
I love the way everyone smiles at babies,
because seeing one is like inhaling hope.
I love the way crying is contagious,
because sometimes our pain is so big
we need to see that it makes others flood too.
I love the way we never know how it will go,
and yet we wake up each day and try.
I love that the lonely ones
get to look up at the stars at night,
at those little pin pricks in the sheet of sky
letting in some light.
