The poems I never wrote

I started a poem
about how well my children get along.

Something about genes
and how they must gravitate
to each other
like cosmic dust
after the Big Bang.

But then one of them scratched the other
and the other one did some kicking
and the words ‘hate’ and ‘forever’ were definitely used
and then the kind of screaming
that makes you hope the neighbours aren’t home,
and I decided they never actually did get along.

So I started a poem about how my children
will be enemies for life.

But then one made the other one laugh
so I didn’t write anything more that day
because as all writers know,
some days
your pen
is a wand.
