The dolphins in Venice

The planes are quiet
like sleeping birds
and the brown ceiling of smog
has been erased
like a child suddenly remembering
the sky is meant
to be blue
and we’ve all read about the dolphins
in Venice
but what I wonder
is what the dolphins think
and whether the older ones
are saying
we’ll see
and whether the younger ones
are saying
they heard us
defiant
with hope.
