A prayer to the traffic gods

The traffic clumped for miles
still and blinking
like a pile of old Christmas lights

and after we parked
in front of our house
finally
our son asleep in the back seat

after Queen came on the radio
and my husband turned the car off
but we somehow knew
without saying it
to stay inside it
swaying in unison
belting out the part
about being champions

I made us a fast dinner
of leftover bits
as we sat in front of the fire
our toques still on

I thought of the invisible beings
that plot out nights like this

and all those people in traffic
inconvenienced
for the delicate choreography
of us.
