Deer

I startle you
but this is not quite true
because you live in a state of startle
so I added nothing new
to your panicked gullet.

How you must suffer autumn,
so much crunch
on the forest floor,
each step alarms the ancestors
that live in your bones.

Memories of cougars,
heavy and sudden as thunder

and bullets
faster than chestnuts
falling from the highest tree.
