The humility of big ideas

My husband explains the theory of dark matter
for the fourth time.

I nod
and ask him if he wants
pasta for dinner.

Perhaps it is my ego
so offended by the idea that it is a fleck
that it scrambles the information
before it reaches my brain.

Tonight, a friend points at the sky,
Mercury and Venus
masquerading as stars.

I want to explain it all
to my daughter,
the distances
as long as time

but I feel like a rabbit
able to think only
about small things
like carrots
and hopping

so I just wave at the moon
and my daughter blows kisses
as we agree

so pretty.
