You hide your superstitions like fetishes
like self-help books
like memories that drag a blush
across your face

I read a study that says
a quarter of us won’t walk
under ladders

so don’t be so shy
about the ominous plots you stave off
by knocking on wood

the Latin root of superstitious
means to stand above
and who’s to say
the irrational is not a place
to which we climb
to see truths
in this largely unprovable world.
