High school basketball

Shoes screech
across the wooden floor
like excited mice

pimply limbs gangle and shove
all hair and sweat and faith
that this matters

I believe too
I can’t help it

clock ticks down
I wonder what that hooting is
and realize it’s me

I am tense and giddy
at the same time
wedged inside this sudden story
addicted to the theatre
of victory and defeat.
