It’s no wonder butterflies
look so excited when they fly,
zig-zagging all over the place
like they don’t want to miss
a speck of air.

You’d be rhapsodic too
if you spent your youth
shuffling around in a sleeping bag,
knitting yourself a sack
that you fell asleep in one day
and when you woke up
you’d been given a makeover
including your own set of wings
and the message:

“These are yours
but only for a few months
so go on, beautiful one,
go fly.”
