On painting

Painting is not done by hand,
it’s done with the eyes.
They seize everything they see,
laying it out on the floor
of the artist’s skull,
and only at the very end
of the painting process
does she actually dip her brush
into that palette
of memory and feeling,
and traces it onto a surface
for another pair of eyes
to try to see.
