Reunion

We merged bubbles,
as they’re calling it now,
and when my daughter hugged her best friend
it was like those reunions you see
of people rescued from mountains.

As the playdate went on,
I kept expecting
their questions and stories,
a pile-up of words
to stitch the cracks of time.

But I realized
they had been living off words
for two months.

I watched as they lay on a blanket,
holding hands
and snacking on apples,

their little hearts feasting
on the simplest moments
of shared space.
