The year we gave in to Santa Claus

We said we wouldn’t do Santa
and all that
but it’s like a drug,
your joy,
so we lie with gusto.

And you didn’t tear the presents open
like we thought you would,
tossing the gifts like carcasses.

You peeled the wrapping paper off
inch by inch
making tidy piles of tissue on the carpet
like the skin shed off a red snake.

Later when I gave you some dental floss
you turned to me and said,

oh, I love it

and I realized
while I was watching you
for signs of greed,
you were watching us
and our polite dance
of gratitude.
