The day peels open
like an eyelid.
Birds berate the trees,
a thousand tiny voices
like a fast wet scrub on glass.
The sky is still early
and white.
The cats are all asleep
but the park is full
of people who have dogs
throwing balls and sticks.
The people look cold
and the dogs wonder
why cold people hunch over
when all they have to do
is run.
