How to write a poem about an apple

Don’t write from your heart,
write from the sockets
of your eyes.

Bore a hole
into the object
in front of you.

Be ruthless.
lean in.

What
do
you
see?

Tell me
what it looks like,
would taste like
if you ate it.

Tell me
it is as green
as anything
but grass.

If you are stuck,
go deeper,
get right inside.

It will tell you.

I am shiny
like a doll’s leg,
I am green
as the blanket of weeds,
thick and quiet
on top of the pond.
