I wish for him
happiness and health,
a good head
on his shoulders,
high school graduation,
a strong back.
My shopping list of sensibleness
is infinite yet beneath
this mountain of prudence,
I hear a quiet intractable voice
squeak out a hope
that I can ignite
some rare talent
and the award speech
he mentions me
the mothering I did,
so clever and tender
along the way.
