WHY I WRITE A POEM A DAY

In January of 2011, I pledged to write a poem every day that year to train myself to slow down and observe the world around me. What was meant to be a one-year experiment threaded its way into my being. Try it yourself. You will experience a sweetness you will wonder how you did without.

TODAY’S POEM

Questions

We are collecting questions
in a very proper book

how tiny is an ant’s heart
who invented vowels
where is Old Zealand

and as their questions grow
like inky vines across the pages
I realize there is no hurry to answer them

sometimes the wonder
is the most exciting
part of all.
