Christmas on steroids

There’s a street in our town
where Christmas
is on steroids.

The lights make Las Vegas look glum,
blinking and glittering
as though the season isn’t for kids
as much as teenage girls.

It’s gaudy and glorious
and I dare you to drive down it
without smiling.

Don’t you see?

It’s all so thick with joy,
it blots out the ache.

Blow-up reindeer lurch in the wind
and Frosty always has that blank stare,
emblems of an innocent time
when you believed the days were short
just so Santa could steer
by the light
of the moon.
