I find a piece of paper
in my kitchen drawer
and I jot down
buy bananas
before I forget
but there
at the bottom
in steady ink
nobody’s handwriting I know
don’t forget to tell him
and I know
I will erode hours
from my life
wondering
who are you
tell him what
and what were you doing in my kitchen
I make a plate
of crackers and butter
and begin to pick at it
like a stray whisker
this new knot
welded
to my brain.
