The appeal of being small

She stood in a bamboo forest once
and she knew exactly how a beetle must feel
winding its way through grass

those soaring stems
knobby like giraffe legs
and she was the flea

every so often she thinks of that moment
and the curious calm
that comes from pretending
she is a shadowy fleck
in the infinite sea
of small things.
