He cries
but it’s not like it is
when we cry
there is nothing somber
in his whimper
his heart is not heavy
he is not even
sad
quite the opposite
he is brazenly optimistic
sure that life is safe
that love is always
close by
he is too young
to have swallowed the inevitability
of disappointment
his wail in the night
is just his way of saying
he is affronted
by this momentary flaw
in the order of things
and would someone kindly hear him
come close
hold him
and make his world right
once again.
