I have been so consumed
by your firsts
I haven’t thought much
about your lasts
until today
sitting on your dad’s shoulders
cocking your head from side to side
making Granny on Skype
do the same
it occured to me
there will be a last time
you sit on your dad’s shoulders
eat food from my fingers
nurse at my breast
growing up is part of the contract
I get it
I just wonder if you might give me a heads up
to pay attention
that final day
breathe it in
say goodbye
properly
I don’t need to make a big fuss
I just want to make sure
I don’t forget to say my thanks
to those parts of you
before they fold up
and tuck themselves away.
