The outskirts of my attention

I stare at the computer
and chew the inside
of my mouth,
willing another email
to fly at me
like an arrow: each one
a temptress
promising distraction
and the hit
of importance.

Then I see him
out of the corner
of my eye,
my six-month-old son,
watching me.

I meet his eyes
and he erupts
into a smile that
punches
my heart.

He has been waiting
at the outskirts of my attention
for I don’t know
how long,
so patient
for such a small being,
brazenly trusting
that I am
worth it.
