White Christmas

We flew here
spike of metal and wind
over land so thick with ice
even the trees stay away

but then as out of place
as that time I saw a tire
floating like a beast
in the centre of the sea
is a road
dragging itself round the mountains for miles

I know I should feel distress
for this species of mine
that cannot keep nature a secret
but I can find only awe
for our grit

we woke to snow
we all say how pretty it is
but that’s not why we want
a white Christmas

we want to erase the evidence
like white-out

a blank canvas
to re-imagine
it all.
