WHY I WRITE A POEM A DAY

In a quest to find more joy in the tedious rhythm of my life as a new mother, I vowed to write a poem every day that year to train myself to observe the world around me. That was 10 years ago, and I never stopped. May this space inspire you to notice the ordinary moments in your own days and find them suddenly bright with wonder.

TODAY’S POEM

The myth of finding balance

Balance is found
not in a day,
but in a life.

So stay up late for weeks
if your soul is lit up
with ideas,

and then rest,
when you need to,
long and deep
like a bear.

Happiness is not an emotion
as much as a rhythm.

Keep tuning in
and let your loved ones
do the same.

My dream is that we can all
be like the sea,

nobody rushing us
when we’re calm

and nobody telling us
to slow down
when we are inspired
to rise up and pound
another frothy chapter
on the shore.
