WHY I WRITE A POEM A DAY

In a quest to find more joy in the tedious rhythm of my life as a new mother, I vowed to write a poem every day that year to train myself to observe the world around me. That was 10 years ago, and I never stopped. May this space inspire you to notice the ordinary moments in your own days and find them suddenly bright with wonder.

TODAY’S POEM

The weight of absence

Grief is like those rogue waves
that surge out of nowhere
and topple ships.

The sadness does this to my daughter
as she buckled today
from the sudden weight
of his absence.

“Grandpa should at least
be allowed to come back
once a year,” she sobs.

I hold her as she pleads,
her little voice
added to the chorus of millions
trying to reason
with the preposterous
finality of death.
