Six places to be when the world ends
I
That day the newspapers reported
the end of the world was coming
at four p.m. All our maids went home
to die with their families. My mother
cleaned the house herself. In bed
afterwards, I brought her lemonade
and lay down next to her. At four
I fell into dreams.
II
That day we woke on the beach,
stole rosaries that hung from the boards
of parent-beds and waited for the horizon
to meet our noses. Four p.m.
miniature hands flutter Ave Maria’s
the sound of waves lapping, noses meeting
sand,
gravel,
belief.
III
Four p.m. Stumbling our way
back to drunken family condos, we spilled
tear-stained bodies into dreams, our rosaries
still warm in our pockets.
IV
That day I dreamed of a boy with a smiling voice
who taught me how to fly. Past the dream pillar
we’d rise and well our bellies with sound
until we burst into a thousand silver molecules
and filled the sky.
I understood the solitude
that drives across abandoned towns
and desecrated mountains, that whispers
V
the rubbing sound of stars, the silence of being
underwater, waves lapping, sand,
gravel,
belief
VI
That day the newspaper reported
the end of the world was coming
at four p.m I lay with my mother
and fell into dreams.
4:03, my mother slapped my thigh,
asked what the hell was I squinting for?
