The view from up here

Flying in at dark
grid of lights
on black roads
as if the night
fell to the ground

getting closer
I see the orderly procession of cars
like snakes
like streams
like children told to line up
single-file

from up here
it’s hard to believe
there is bewilderment
in the world

I remember it was like this
even when I flew into Mexico City
the tangle of shanty towns
made the hills look like pyramids
and as the sun set
over the pollution
that would choke me
it covered the whole scene
in the colour
of the sweetest
ripest
peach.

Love the simile of the children lining up, and also the peach comparison. This makes me rethink or imagine what a wonder it is to behold the scattering of indecipherable sights when soaring so far above in the ebony sky.

love this. it makes me see again what I’ve seen when flying at night, and I’m very grateful to you for this xo
