The slippery nature of metaphors

You’d expect a poet to have dominion
over his own metaphors
but sometimes he walks down the street
an innocuous dribble of strangers and cars
and he looks up
wanting to see the sky
as blue as a cotton shirt
but all he sees is the way blue
can also look like a bruise
on a hopeful
broken
face.
