We squat on the dirt
under the willow tree
our favourite spot
like playing under a big skirt
the shadows waver in the breeze
his hands search out tiny things
pebbles
bit of chocolate bar wrapper
he looks at me each time he hands one over
they are not a gift
this is clear
I am here to bear witness to his hunt
applaud his finds
and hold them safe
while he digs for more.
