The temptation to please

Charisma
drop off me
like an overcoat
leave me bare
take humility with you
and wit and grace
just for a moment
let me peel back
the temptation to please
and stand boldly
in the sublime discomfort
of self.

The ironic thing is, once you drop off pretending to be or have those things, you find what you were pretending is actually real…and can now move into a fuller, more authentic expression.

I love love love your poems. The way you slice a thought open and serve it up to me like supper. Thank you!
