Viable fragments
Lungs and sunsets
don’t make me believe in God.
They feel like viable fragments
of the bang:
splendid
but orderly milestones
along the path
of evolution.
What gives me pause
are the seventeen brands of cat food
thread count
flat screens
cooking shows
lamp posts.
It’s the impossible grain of detail
of our lives
that makes me think
somebody clever
is up
to something.

I find the adjectives associated with all these clever products to be most overwhelming. Today I was walking back from yoga and was stopped in my tracks by a magnolia tree that was blooming like it was… as if it was Dolly Parton. I thought that was a clever tree.
